Our teeth are the center of our smile. Beautiful set of teeth boosts confidence and positive morale. That is why our parents always remind us to take care of our teeth since we were young and that applies for the rest of our lives. Our teeth are not just for beautiful smiles it is also an important tool that we use for eating. Yes, it is that useful. Yet, most people take it for granted. We only notice our oral health once we experience pain like a toothache. It’s a pain like no other. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 as the highest, toothache is around 8-10. It is an excruciating pain radiating to the head. Is it already too late for oral health care? Maybe not. There are some tips on how we can keep our teeth stronger and healthier.

  • Protect your enamel, limit sugary fruits and drinks.
Enamel is the hard surface of the teeth. Sugary foods and drinks feed the bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria then produce acid which softens and damages the enamel. Calcium found in the food that we eat counters the acidity of the mouth. It also strengthens our bones and teeth.
  • Avoid over-brushing, use fluoride instead.
Contrary to belief, you do not need to brush your teeth every after a meal since some people eat 5 to 6 times a day. Instead, brush your teeth gently 2-3 times a day. Use soft bristles and brush it gently. When you ate citrus fruits or sweets wait for an hour, then brush your teeth. These type of foods softens the enamel, brushing your teeth immediately after eating damages it. Fluoride fights off cavity and prevents early signs of tooth decay. It gives the teeth resistance to acids produced by the bacteria and the sweet foods in our mouth.
  • Treat eating disorders and heartburn.
If you have heartburn and gastric refluxes, the acid reaches your mouth and eventually your teeth. These acidic substances erode the enamel of the teeth.
  • Always keep your mouth hydrated.
Saliva washes away bacteria and food that may lead to dental caries. It also neutralizes the acidity of the food that we eat. Drink plenty of water, keep your oral cavity moisturized all the time.
  • Avoid grinding your teeth.
Some people grind their teeth especially during sleep and this damages the enamel. Consult your dentist for possible interventions.
  • Visit your dentist regularly.
We only need to visit the dentist at least twice a year or every six months. Dentists can see early signs of cavities, they too can make sure that you get enough fluoride for your teeth.
